Summary The Coming of Columbus (1912)

As is known, Columbus visited nearly every Court in Europe for assistance to carry out his great project. The Selig films introduce him to us in Portugal, where he sought the favor of John II. We see him visit a quaint votive shrine in Portugal accompanied by his son Diego, who is seen leading the lone donkey, which carried their scanty effects. They are on the way to Spain, where the mariner hopes to gain an audience with the good Queen Isabella. We next see the little party at an old mission in Spain, where Columbus stops and explains his plans and theories to the pious fathers. Most of the latter, we can see, are astounded at his views on geography and shake their heads gravely as they ponder. However, he interests Fra Antonio, one of the Queen's confessors, who succeeds in getting him an audience with her Majesty. The meeting takes place in the royal tent on the field of Granada, where at the time, a conflict rages between the royal troops and the Moors. Just as Columbus has won the Queen's ear and he has spread his charts on the table, messengers arrive from the battlefield and announce the surrender of the Moors, putting an end to the interview. Isabella turns Columbus over to the wise men of Salamanca to test his sanity, and one can easily see that they look on him as a mad theorist. But Fra Antonio persuades the Queen to grant Columbus another audience, and we are treated to a splendid Court scene, where Isabella and Ferdinand listen to the great mariner. The Queen offers to sell her jewels to support Columbus on his quest, but she is spared the sacrifice by the generosity of Fernandez, the Court physician, who finances the undertaking. Next we see Columbus made an admiral by King Ferdinand, in presence of the Court, and a great procession of ecclesiastics, a vestal choir, famous dignitaries and other members of the laity as they march past the royal stand. This is one of the most imposing scenes in the three films and forms a fitting close to the first reel. And now the three caravels pass before us in order; first the flagship Santa Maria, next the Pinta and then the Nina. They are first seen anchored in the quiet harbor of Palos, from which they set sail on an epoch-making voyage. We catch a glimpse of Sunday mass on board the Santa Maria as the little vessels plow their ways further into unknown seas. And soon we notice discontent and disaffection among the sailors. The captains of the smaller craft see it and, half in accord with the spirit, try to influence Columbus to turn back to Spain. They visit him again as mutiny flaunts its face, and we see the intrepid Commander quelling the turbulent spirits by his presence and cheering words of hope. Shortly afterwards we see the faces of Columbus and others raised aloft in ecstasy, as the lookout cries, "Land Ho!" "Away to the West," he further cries in answer to the Admiral. And then, with hearts full of thankfulness to the Giver of all Good, we see the worn out sailors join with their Commander in offering thanksgiving. Then a bird is caught in the rigging by a sailor, and every eye is strained to catch a glimpse of the shore from which it has flown. Next we view the fleet at anchor and the landing on the island, on the coast of which a body of natives watches the strange white men from the clouds. The standard of Spain is reared on the new soil on which Columbus had first planted the emblem of the cross. The third reel opens with a magnificent scene showing the welcome extended Columbus and his men at the Court of Ferdinand and Isabella. It is one fully befitting the occasion, and fairly flashes with royal and courtly splendor. In the midst of the great assemblage, where even stoical grandees applaud the success of Columbus, he is knighted by King Ferdinand. A fine interior scene is devoted to the "egg" incident. We see the insulting courtier, who had tried to belittle the feat of Columbus, humbled by the simple problem of standing an egg on end. This scene is artistically posed and is worthy of being ranked with a great painting. The third voyage is undertaken by Columbus and we see him mourning over the destruction of his colony, La Navidad. Insolent and avaricious Spanish nobles had wrought the ruin, and already they had planned the ruin of the Great Discoverer. While he is endeavoring to rebuild the colony and the fortunes of the natives who love him, Francisco de Boabdilla arrives to take him back in chains to Spain. As the arrest is being made the following proclamation is read: "Whereas, one Christoper Columbus, governor of the Antilles, has been found guilty of malfeasance in office and has not accounted for much gold promised the Crown, the Commissioner of the Crown, Boabdilla, will cause his arrest and conduct him to Spain for trial. Ferdinand." We see the natives determined to set Columbus free; but we also see him dissuading them from their purpose. Then our blood boils as we watch them riveting the cruel chains on his ankles, and witness the further shame of Spain as he sails away, bound and alone, in the vessel's hold. The final sub-title in the third reel, "Sic transit Gloria virum," is scarcely fitting in this case. True, the honors heaped on a man by the world may pass away, but the glory of great deeds performed by him for the human race cannot pass away. The glory of Columbus is greater now than ever before. While cheated of his right to have the great continent, discovered by him, named after him, the story of his life is known to all, while one is obliged to refer to an encyclopedia for information about Amerigo.

After the end of the Second World War, public attitudes began to change but the Hays Office and the League of Decency still held considerable sway. When the much-loved Ingrid Berman announced she was going to leave her husband to live with Roberto Rossellini, she was the subject of a fierce campaign of character assassination and even denounced on the floor of the US Senate. A Supreme Court ruling in 1952 granting films the same freedom of speech protection as other arts opens the door. It starts with European films being shown in art house theaters but it's the works of Tennessee Williams that really sets the stage for literate films with adult themes. The 1950s was also the time of the sex symbol including Mamie Van Doren, Jayne Mansfield and from Europe, the elegant Sophia Loren. None had quite the impact of Marilyn Monroe, however.

The new queen of Camelot proves to be far crueler than Uther, who is made to watch from his dungeon as she slaughters innocents. Guinevere helps Sir Leon escape from prison and joins her brother Elyan, Gaius, Merlin, Arthur and Gwaine, who are hiding in the woods. Soldiers follow but they are saved by Lancelot and a youth of immense strength, Percival. Merlin looks into the waters of Avalon in the phial given him by the Fisher King, which directs him to Excalibur, the sword which will defeat the enemy. The fugitives find a round table, around which they movingly declare allegiance to each other, and Arthur knights all the young men - except, of course, Merlin, though Lancelot, aware of his powers, tells Merlin he is the bravest of them all. The group launches its invasion of Camelot, which gives Gaius his finest hour as the sisters are routed, largely due to Merlin's use of Excalibur. However, he places the sword in a rock until it can be used again.

A week into the reign of deposed Uther's bastard daughter Morgana and her even more evil sorceress sister Morgause, they attempt to impose their authority by violence, executing loyal knights. Arthur, hiding with Merlin, Gaius and Gwaine, are soon joined by Lancelot, Percival, Gwen and her brother Elyan. The key to liberating Uther and all Camelot is overcoming the army of the undead, which loses its immortality only if the Cup of Life is emptied. Merlin summons the dragon to help him retrieve the dragon breath-forged sword Excalibur, the only weapon which slays the undead. His ultimate asset is the gift from the Fisher King, but ignores how to use it.

Sir Leon is nursed back to health by Druids using the Cup of Life after he is the sole survivor of an attack by Cenred's men. It purportedly grants immortality to those who drink from it, and Arthur and Merlin retrieve it from the Druids to prevent it falling into Cenred's hands. However, they, along with Gwaine, are ambushed and the cup stolen. Having killed Cenred, Morgause makes his soldiers drink from it and, under her orders, they successfully attack Camelot. By the time the three young men arrive back at the court, Uther is in chains and Camelot has a new ruler.

When Uther learns the Druids in Cenred's kingdom hold the Cup of Life which can render immortality, he orders Arthur to head an expedition and go snatch it, but Morgana informs Morgause, who alerts Cenred. Arthur and Merlin, with Gwaine who joins them on the way, are captured by slave trader Jarl. They escape during a 'gladiator' duel, but that puts Cenred's men on their trail. While returning with the cup (which the Druids hand over after a mere threat to hurt a boy), they fall in enemy hands. Cenred's men are made an immortal army, while Morgause kills Cenred. This invincible force marches on Camelot, unstoppable, wrecking unseen havoc on the way and in the city. Uther is easily captured. Arthur is wounded but, once healed, starts the desperate journey home, with his two companions, past slain knights.

Lone Wolf decides to take a Hopi maid for his squaw. Bearing suitable gifts, the Indian sets out for the Hopi village. Natoma's pity for Crooked Leg, a crippled Hopi, is mistaken by the old man for love. Unknown to Crooked Leg, however, the maiden loves Lightfoot, a warrior of the tribe. Lone Wolf arrives at the village. Displaying the presents he has brought, he offers them to Chief Big Thunder in exchange for a Hopi maid who strikes his fancy. Filled with greed, the chief orders all the girls to appear before Lone Wolf. Lightfoot and Crooked Leg learn of this with anger. Big Thunder drags Natoma before Lone Wolf, who immediately decides to make her his squaw. Crooked Leg begs Natoma to wed him. Lone Wolf comes upon the man in the midst of his plea. Seizing him by the throat the Indian almost strangles him. Vowing vengeance, the old cripple seizes his rifle and follows Lone Wolf as he leaves the village with Natoma behind him. Lightfoot also arms himself and follows his sweetheart and the man who has purchased her. When in the midst of a thicket, Lightfoot raises his rifle and covers Lone Wolf. Before he can fire, however, a shot rings out. Lone Wolf falls from his horse, dead. Startled, Lightfoot runs to the spot. Natoma believes her lover to have committed the murder, until he shows her his rifle has not been fired. Crooked Leg, hidden behind a tree, learns that Natoma and Lightfoot love each other. He is about to slay the man, when he realizes that his physical deformities and age would bar him from marrying Natoma. Hobbling up to the scene, Crooked Leg announces his guilt and his determination to pay for the crime. Placing the slain Indian across his horse. Crooked Leg limps towards the Hopi village, and death.
